Happy New Year!
A surfer turned author, although still surfer through and through. One of Tom’s main goals in life is to surf into old age, and although the years are slowly catching up with him, getting in the water is what drives him as much as ever. After some time competing (and usually losing), Tom was inspired by his passion for travel to write the iconic surf memoir Riding the Magic Carpet – a tale of worldwide trips culminating at South Africa’s Jeffrey’s Bay. While J-Bay is up there with the best waves Tom’s ever ridden, he’s a firm believer in the idea that the situation is as important as the waves, and cites some of his best sessions ever as taking place in a weird and wonderful range of places, from Taiwan to Trestles, low tide Snapper to low-tide Coney.
Tom’s trips have formed the basis for other books too. A hurricane season road-trip along the US East Coast formed the storyline for Chasing Dean and his exploits around our own British Isles were detailed in Grey Skies, Green Waves. Perhaps the least believable thing about Tom is that he is also a former PI, and it is some of these experiences that lie behind his debut thriller, released this autumn: The Actaeon Tide, which is currently being serialised in its entirety by the Western Mail. Spring 2015 will see the release of Code Black, a ‘Quick Read’ title which tells a few tales of the surfing that went down during the recent UK winter storms. He is currently working on a young adults novel for 2016.
Tom also rides for Flow Surf & Skate shop and Luke Young Surfboards, and is delighted to be coming on board as a brand ambassador for Elusive. ‘These guys absolutely, one-thousand per-cent share my idea of what a proper, organic, home-grown, counter-culture clothing label should be. Art matters, surfing is fun – and that’s all there is to it!’

Double British Champion Scott Eastwood finds a few gems across the water.
Team riders Scott Eastwood & Greg Norman finished their 2014 contest campaigns in style.
Jersey based Scott returned to the mainland and won both the 2014 British Senior & Masters titles.

Greg ended the 2014 Hotdoggers longboard contest series with two 2nd place finishes in the Open & Single Fin divisions.

Elusive Open of Surf 2014. 18th October, Coney Beach, Porthcawl
With a big storm front hitting the UK and after an anxious few days leading up to the event, the organisers decided to re-locate the comp to Coney Beach.
As the incoming tide pushed around the harbour wall the swell started to increase offering a variety of sections for the competitors to put in some big moves. Early round stand outs included Jordan Reed, James Jones, Ingemar Cressey, Nathaniel James, Cieran Hughes, Joe Morris, Raife Gaskell, Emily Williams & Libby Vernon.
As the midday mark approached, the clouds began to break and the sun appeared warming up the Autumn air. Spectators flocked to the event site to witness a high level of performance surfing and try out the numerous demo skateboards on offer, courtesy of Carver & Sunset.
The women, longboard and U/18 finals were eagerly contested with excellent performances from all involved, keeping the judges on their toes. Emily Williams continued her winning form taking the Women’s title, last year’s Longboard runner up Steve Horn did one better and flawless Max Payne picked up the U/18 title.
Prior to the Open Final the eagerly anticipated fancy dress “Super Hero Expression Session” got underway, as 9 competitors hit the water dressed in everything from Super Girl to Banana Man. The competitors raising sponsorship with all proceeds going to Wave Project Cymru. http://www.waveproject.co.uk
The Open final got underway in the late afternoon sun with 3 of the top standout surfers of the event, (unfortunately James Jones was unable to surf the final and kindly donated his prize to Wave Project Cymru) Big moves and big scores were posted in a hotly contested heat that had spectators unsure after the 20mins who would take the title. In the end it was Pembroke’s Alex Morris’ narrow victory claiming the trophy and a voucher for a custom shaped Diplock surfboard.

A day of good waves and great weather plus the Hi tide decking area proved to be a perfect contest site, with an excellent viewing point of all the action. Big thanks to the guys for allowing us to use their facilities.

Elusive Open Of Surf returns to Porthcawl.
The 8th Annual Open of Surf 2014 will take place on the 18th October at Rest Bay, Porthcawl.
Co-sponsored by Diplock Surfboards, Obsessive-Disorder hardware, Nectar Sunglasses, Carver & Sunset Skateboards, Flow Surf & Skate, City Surf & Skate, and supported by the Welsh Surfing Federation, the Welsh Coast Surf Club, Christian Surfers and Bridgend Council.
In conjunction with the event, there will be a “Super Hero” fancy dress Expression session with all proceeds going to Wave Project Cymru.

Local radio station Bridge FM will be covering the day’s events that include non-stop surfing action, skateboard demonstration and BBQ.
The Elusive Welsh Open has a strong association with Porthcawl, hosting the event on 7 previous occasions. The town has a rich heritage of surfing and is home to a handful of past champions.
Returning this year and hoping to retain his 2012 crown will be ex South African WQS surfer and triple Elusive Champion Mike Young. The question is, can the Elusive Open trophy return to Wales?
There will be an Open, Women’s & Open Longboard category, plus prizes for the highest placed U/16 in each category.
Prizes include a custom shaped shortboard, women’s wetsuit, sunglasses, skateboards, tail pads, clothing and discount shopping vouchers. Elusive owner Nick Clewer added, “We’ve received excellent local support for this event right from the start back in 2006. The town is a perfect location with excellent amenities and the beaches right on the door step, and it promises to be a great fun event.

After a very long English winter and immense work pressure , I found myself jaded by the whole surf thing, some days there was plenty swell but the wind was either howling in the wrong direction, or it was just freezing and I simple felt like I had lost my stoke. The final straw was me racing myself to A&E for an emergency appendix removal, lying in hospital I thought, “I definitely need a surf trip”.
As luck happens my best friend is a surf guide on board the Kaimana which charters around the Mentawais. I had always planned to go, but it always panned out that something else came up, this time I was adamant.
On the 27th of April we set sail from Padang headed for the Ments, what happened after that can only be described as the best thing I could have ever done for myself (exactly what the doctor ordered), for the next ten days I got to surf flawless surf in pristine surroundings, everything from scary to the most playful surf, from heaving Greenbush to skatepark like Roxys. The Crew waited on us hand & foot and made my stay aboard the Kaimana amazing. Stan my best mate and guide made sure we were on the best waves the islands could spit out for us and general smiles and laughs all round.
Needless to say my stoke is back and I’m frothing harder than ever to surf all the time I feel like an excited grom again!!! Special thanks goes out to my amazing wife who allowed me to go and ran the household while I was getting barrelled of my nut.
