Young makes it a triple win.
Early Saturday morning organisers & competitors were greeted to light winds, 2-3 foot waves and cloudless blue skies.
A wait for the low tide to turn saw a 9am start and the Open division set to task of destroying the building waves on offer, early round stand outs included Tom Anderson, Jordan Reed, Alex Morris and Mike Young.
As soon as the Open division was whittled down to the semi-final stages, the women & longboard divisions entered the water as a slight swell increased on Rest Bays pushing tide. This ensured some fantastic performances, keeping the crowd entertained.
As the midday mark approached, the sun shone & surfing hotted up a large crowd assembled on Rest Bays natural amphitheatre to witness the high level of performance surfing as the heats drew close to the anticipated finale.
The women, longboard and supergrom finals were eagerly contested with excellent performances from all involved, keeping the judges on their toes.
The Open final got underway just at the high tide mark and straight off the hooter Mike Young was into action, sitting near the point and picking off some nice lefts into the bay. Not to be outdone, the remainder followed suit posting some critical moves and high scores, keeping the judges busy. Finally it was a triple win for 2006 & 2012 Welsh Open Winner Mike Young, getting the nod over an impressive Alex Morris and picking up a nice weekend break for 2 in Portugal.
A big shout out goes to the co-sponsors: Errant Surf, Adams Surfboards, Obsessive Disorder, SBT, Bonga Boards, Keebunga, SevenT and UK Surf Store…….thank you for the support and the prizes!!
The event would not have been a success if it wasn’t for the support of the Christian Surfers, Welsh Surfing Federation, Welsh Coast Surf Club, Bridgend Council, Rest Bay Lifeguards, all the judges (Craig, Linda, Steve, Tim), Michaela Kuhne, Stu Bentley & Bob & Anne Blythe.
